Industry: Merchandise fulfillment

Size: 200 employees

Issue: Corporate office of merchandise retailer stores located in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Human Resource Manager was receiving complaints from employees about a co-worker's boyfriend making frequent appearances at the worksite. The employee's demeanor had changed significantly and she had become reclusive and angry. She appeared to have various bruises and injuries that she attempted to cover with clothing and make-up. Attempts to talk with her were abruptly rebuffed.

Solution: Management was provided with referral resources for the employee, including the contact information for a therapist specializing in working with victims of domestic violence (and those that haven't yet recognized themselves as a victim). The alternative offer was to have Stephanie Angelo meet personally with the employee.

The company chose to have Stephanie and the employee meet. The two spoke for a period of time in which the employee was able to relax and speak safely and freely about her relationship and the abuse she was experiencing. She freely admitted that she was an equal participant and had engaged in full-blown physical fights with her boyfriend. She received a copy of Battered and Abused - Bringing the Darkness into the Light, a supply of safety shoe cards, and several phone numbers of local resources including counseling services.

Results: Both the employee and her boyfriend began intensive therapy with separate counselors. The relationship improved significantly and the employee's demeanor and productivity at work climbed back to her previous high standard of performance.
